Kohima: Twenty-five elderly residents of the Good Samaritan Senior Citizens Home in Meriema joined forces with officials from the Nagaland Department of Social Welfare and the Senior Citizens Association of Nagaland to mark World Environment Day. The group planted numerous tree species below the High Court in Kohima to support the state level observance of the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam campaign.

The event centered on the theme Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future. Tosheli Zhimomi, Director of the Department of Social Welfare, explained that the campaign serves as a living tribute to the dedication of mothers. She remarked that the initiative acts as a reminder that humanity belongs to the Earth and that the Earth, in turn, sustains all life.

Zhimomi noted that planting saplings honors the sacrifices of mothers while providing long-term environmental benefits for future generations. The event featured slogans such as Elders Protect Nature, Nature Protects Future Generations and Plant Today, Breathe Tomorrow. Wisdom of Our Elders to emphasize the importance of ecological preservation.

Dr. Pihoto I. Khala, President of the Senior Citizens Association of Nagaland, urged attendees to prioritize environmental protection during development. He advocated for eco-friendly practices that do not disrupt the ecosystem, calling for a collective commitment to maintaining green hills and a healthy environment. The program concluded with a plantation drive under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao initiative, followed by a gift presentation to the senior citizens to honor their contributions.
