Search party recovers missing youth from Upper Shillong gorge

Shillong: Search teams pulled the body of Wellbornstar Lyngdoh Nongbsap from a deep gorge at Umtong waterfall in Umlyngka, Upper Shillong, on Tuesday. The 25-year-old had been missing since July 25. His father, Birestar Nongsiej, identified the remains at the scene.

Local residents and family members spotted the body stuck in the rocks at 8 am. They notified village authorities, who then called in the Fire and Emergency Services Search and Rescue Team. The team faced a brutal, steep climb to reach the site. They used ropes to descend the gorge, working with locals to haul the body out of the jagged terrain.

Umlyngka Rangbah Shnong Trekilad Lakiang noted that village residents had been scouring the area since the youth vanished on Saturday. Officials from the Jhalupara Outpost and a forensic squad examined the site before transferring the victim to Civil Hospital. Staff there will conduct a post-mortem examination. Police are investigating the death, stating, "An investigation is under way to determine the cause of death."
