Sanbor Shullai honors U Tirot Sing with new statue in Shillong

Shillong: Arts and Culture Minister Sanbor Shullai installed a life-size statue of Khasi freedom fighter U Tirot Sing Syiem at Lumshatsngi on Saturday. The project cost Rs 10 lakh. Shullai funded the work through his Special Urban Works Programme. He secured all necessary no-objection certificates from local authorities before building it.

The Raid Laban Sports, Social and Cultural Organisation erected the monument. It stands as the first full-size statue of the leader in the South Shillong constituency. Lumshatsngi Rangbah Shnong Wahbok S. Lyngdoh chaired the ceremony. Attendees included Phrester Manik Syiem, who is the Syiem Hima Nongkhlaw, and Raid Laban Dorbar president Iastar Sunn. A traditional Shad Thma dance performance opened the event.

Shullai wants local youth to study history. He told reporters: "The younger generation to understand the life and contribution of U Tirot Sing rather than viewing the statue merely as a symbol of remembrance." He encouraged students to pick up books and learn about the sacrifices made by the Khasi leader during the freedom struggle.
