Itanagar: A 110-metre chunk of the Khonsa-Lazu Road caved in this week. Heavy rain turned the ground to mush. The collapse severed the main artery connecting 16 villages in the Lazu Administrative Circle, including Kheti, Thinsa, and Lapnan. Commuters, students, and workers are now stuck.

Key outposts are cut off. The route normally feeds traffic to the Assam Rifles and CRPF headquarters, alongside the local APSTS bus station and the Government Higher Secondary School. Officials slammed the road shut. Buses stopped running and will stay parked until engineers confirm the ground is stable.

PWD Executive Engineer Taro Jeram surveyed the damage. He found deep subgrade failure and constant erosion. He told the district to label the area a black spot because the earth keeps moving. Jeram stated, "The damaged portion falls within a slow-sinking zone and has suffered major subgrade failure."

Fixing the road is a nightmare. Past repairs to the walls and pavement failed to stop the ground from shifting. Engineers are now weighing pile foundation work or carving out a completely new road alignment. For now, the district shifted traffic through Bank Colony and the Deputy Commissioner's Office. Residents living nearby should pack their bags and move to safer ground. More movement is coming.
