Kohima: The Rising People's Party merged with the ruling Naga People's Front on July 11. The move signals a shift in local politics. Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio welcomed the leadership at a Kohima event. He wants unity. Rio believes this move brings together "people, ideas, experiences and aspirations" for the broader Naga community.
Resolving the long-standing Naga political issue stays the main goal for the party and the governing alliance. Decades of conflict have left the people waiting for an honorable settlement. Rio admits that physical integration across Nagaland, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Myanmar is not immediate. He urged locals to focus on emotional ties instead.
The Rising People's Party launched in 2020 but failed to win a single seat during the 2023 assembly elections. They currently hold no power in the sixty-member house. NPF secretary general Achumbemo Kikon confirmed the merger. Several RPP leaders now hold new roles in the NPF central organization. Rio continues to push his agenda for peace and infrastructure growth.
