Shillong: Shillong is ready to host the 135th Durand Cup. India's oldest football tournament lands in the city later this month. Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Wailadmiki Shylla confirmed the news on Saturday. He claims the event honors the state's deep sports roots. "Hosting the prestigious competition reflects Meghalaya's deep-rooted football tradition and the enthusiasm of its fans," Shylla said.

Local squads Shillong Lajong FC, Nongthymmai Sports Social and Cultural Club, and Rangdajied United FC will represent the home turf. A high-profile team from Mumbai joins them to play in the hills. Lt Gen Mohit Wadhwa of the 101 Area laid out the plan. Twenty-four teams face off across five cities including Guwahati, Kolkata, Ranchi, and Imphal.

The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium will stage eight matches. The slate includes six group games, one quarter-final, and one semi-final. Action starts July 31 and runs until the final match on August 23. This schedule solidifies Meghalaya as a premier hub for the sport.
