Rights Group Calls for Investigation into Alleged Deportation of Two Assam Women

Guwahati: A local rights group is demanding an impartial investigation into claims that authorities illegally deported two women from Assam to Bangladesh. Members of the Ganatantra Suraksha Manch allege that Mumtaz Begum and Jahanara Khatun were pushed across the border before they could complete the necessary legal processes to clarify their citizenship status.

According to the organization, both women are from Nagaon district and had appeared before the Foreigners Tribunal in Juria roughly a month ago. They reportedly followed an order from the Gauhati High Court to seek legal assistance regarding their residency. The group claims that Border Police arrested the women while these proceedings were still underway and held them at the Goalpara detention centre before facilitating their transfer through Border Security Force channels.

During a press conference held on June 17, leaders of the organization argued that the deportation violated judicial safeguards and basic democratic principles. The group emphasized that individuals must be allowed to exhaust all legal remedies before facing such extreme action. As they stated to the media, "deporting or pushing back any individual without allowing the completion of legal proceedings and access to all available judicial remedies would be contrary to democratic principles and the rule of law."

Human rights defenders and social activists joined the call for transparency, urging the government to clarify the current whereabouts of the women. While local debate continues to intensify across the Rupahihat and Juria regions, the government has not yet provided an official response to these allegations.
