Guwahati: The Federation of Retailers Association of India (FRAI) is calling on the government to protect traditional shopkeepers from the growing threat of illicit trade and unfair market practices. During a seminar in Guwahati titled Confronting Illicit Trade in Modern Markets, industry leaders gathered to discuss how counterfeit goods, illegal distribution networks, and non-compliant products are damaging the economy.

Beyond the issue of illicit goods, the discussion centered on the impact of specific e-commerce business models. Participants pointed to predatory pricing and rapid expansion strategies as major factors creating market imbalances that put local retailers at a disadvantage.

FRAI Assam President Birendra Chandra Baishya noted that small businesses, including kirana stores, serve as the foundation for the local economy. He emphasized the necessity of government oversight to preserve the livelihoods of self-employed families. Regarding the current climate, Baishya stated, "Small retailers and kirana stores form the backbone of the country's local economy and community life."

The seminar concluded with a plea for stricter enforcement against illegal trade and the implementation of policies that establish a level playing field. Industry representatives cautioned that without swift intervention, the long-standing entrepreneurial culture in India could face permanent damage.
