Guwahati: State ministers and local groups are scrambling to stabilize Assam following severe floods. In Sivasagar, Agriculture Minister Pijush Hazarika continues to camp in the district to oversee recovery. He stated, "By the grace of God, the situation is improving. The government is working day and night to help our people."
Government relief remains active. Officials have promised temporary housing starting Sunday, with permanent homes expected within two months. The state also provided interim ex gratia payments of 15,000 rupees to affected families. Total compensation for the kin of flood victims reached 9 lakh rupees. This includes a 4 lakh standard payment plus a 5 lakh government add-on. Sivasagar reports 29 deaths and two people still missing.
Agricultural recovery is now a priority. Minister Hazarika inaugurated a community paddy sowing drive at the Khilaguri High School playground in Moran, Charaideo district. The project uses the CR Dhan-310 variety. Farmers may receive up to 2 lakh rupees in compensation after final crop loss assessments. The state also waived one year of land revenue and one month of electricity bills for victims.
Meanwhile, in Haflong, Muslim youths collected donations at the local Masjid following August 1 prayers. The All Adivasi Students' Association of Assam also launched a paddy seed-sowing program in Sivasagar’s Paraliguri-Pahukhowa area on August 2. That project covers 500 bighas of land. AATASU president Milan Burhagohain confirmed the group aims to restore local production.
Minister Hazarika addressed opposition criticism while speaking in Moran alongside MLA Suruj Dihingia and MP Jogen Mohan. He promised the construction of a 20-km embankment from Simoluguri to Bihubar as soon as land is secured. "The government will never leave people to fend for themselves during natural disasters such as floods," Hazarika said. The state continues to distribute roofing tin, bamboo, and clothing to families whose homes were destroyed.
