Residents protest in Imphal after 11-year-old girl shot

Imphal: Tensions rose in the Imphal East district on Monday as residents gathered to protest a shooting that left an 11-year-old girl injured. The incident occurred late Sunday night in the Kshetri Awang Ching Mamang Leikai area, where unidentified gunmen fired multiple shots into the neighborhood.

The victim, identified as Shahida, also known as Athoi, was struck by a stray bullet and rushed to the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences. She is currently receiving treatment for a gunshot wound to her buttock. The attack has drawn sharp condemnation from community leaders and members of the Youth Progressive Organisation.

During the demonstration at Kshetri Bengoon Awang Leikai, the girl's mother, Meichon, called for accountability from the authorities. She told the crowd, "My daughter has done nothing wrong. We are ordinary people trying to earn a livelihood. Those responsible must be identified and punished according to law."

YPO advisor Syed Fazlur Rahman labeled the shooting of a child an unacceptable act and demanded a swift investigation. He confirmed that the organization plans to contact the Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights to ensure the case remains a priority. While the Porompat Police Station has registered a case and initiated an inquiry, no arrests have been made as of Monday.
