Residents find two bodies under silt in flood-hit Assam village

Guwahati: Residents of Nepalikhuti village in Assam’s Sivasagar district returned home to a grim scene. Floodwaters finally receded, leaving behind heavy layers of silt and wreckage. Villagers sifting through the mud to assess damage made a dark discovery. They found two bodies buried deep beneath the sediment.

The village was hit hard by recent floods in Upper Assam. Residents had fled their homes as water destroyed local infrastructure. Now, they are digging through debris, finding refrigerators and household items strewn across the landscape. The search for missing people continues. Many fear more victims remain trapped under the mud.

One body appeared near the riverbank. Only the legs showed above the silt. The second body lay beneath thick deposits near the home of Sonu Karmarkar. Locals believe the thick sediment completely encased both victims. One local said, "We all came back to our village today. While clearing our homes, we found two dead bodies. We immediately informed the Gaonburha and the police administration."

Residents suspect one of the deceased is the wife of Rajen Panika. Officials have not confirmed this identity yet. Police and civil authorities received reports of the findings immediately. Officials plan to retrieve the bodies, confirm identities, and perform post-mortem examinations. The clean-up is far from over.
