Guwahati: A brutal cloudburst in the Naga Hills triggered massive flooding across Assam's Sivasagar district. Twenty-four hours of nonstop rain turned the situation dire. Thousands of residents are currently stuck in their homes. Water levels in the Dikhow, Disang, and Dorika rivers spiked, spilling over banks and into neighborhoods.
Multiple regions are underwater. The damage spans Chontok, Bihubar, Nazira, Simoluguri, Jhanji, and Jamuguri. Jamuguri took a heavy hit after an embankment along the Jhanji river snapped. Local officials confirmed the scale of the crisis. "However, many people remain trapped in floodwaters," officials said.
Sivasagar town is not spared. Low-lying zones like Cherekapar, Bhati Bongaon, Komarphadia, Arjunguri, Amgurighat, Jolagaon, and Napam Gaon are dealing with rising water. Roads are submerged and transit is dead. The National Disaster Response Force and State Disaster Response Force are working the area. Authorities may call in armed forces helicopters for Chontok and Bihubar soon. Officials told locals to stay alert and off the roads.
