Guwahati: Locals in Barpathar want their old district borders back. Members of the Barpathar Border Protection Committee demanded the Assam government restore the boundary between Nagaon and Karbi Anglong on Monday. They argue that nine local revenue villages historically belong to Nagaon. These villages rely on Nagaon for schools, social services, and religious institutions.
Pressure is mounting after Samaguri MLA Jitu Goswami visited the area on July 3. He ordered the Kampur Revenue Circle Officer to redraw the lines within one week. The committee members backed his decision during a press conference at the Barpathar Gaon Panchayat office. Participants dismissed recent protests by the Karbi Students Association as unjustified. They claimed the group had no right to oppose the change.
"The residents of the area wished to continue under Nagaon district," committee members stated. Supporters chanted slogans for Goswami as they outlined their position. Now, the committee wants Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to step in. They hope for a permanent, peaceful fix to this old, bitter territorial fight. The meeting included local officials and community leaders like Sumitra Medhi Hazarika and Nripen Nath.
