Residents Allege Corruption in Assam MGNREGA Projects

Guwahati: Residents of the Singia Gaon Panchayat in Assam’s Nagaon district have accused local officials of misusing funds and failing to properly execute development projects under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act. The allegations focus on work completed during the 2024 to 2025 financial year within the Juria Development Block.

The complaints specifically highlight an agricultural embankment project in Ward No. 5, which spans from East Singaria Mosque to Baniya Bidal. Locals claim the physical state of the project does not align with sanctioned estimates, suggesting a significant discrepancy in how public money was spent. They also report that project signboards were installed improperly and that only minimal work was completed despite available funding.

Villagers have pointed to the involvement of GRS Abdullah Faruqi and Assistant Engineer Biswajit Das in the oversight of these projects. Some residents also alleged that local representatives colluded to facilitate these irregularities. In response to these claims, local citizens have petitioned the State Panchayat and Rural Development Minister, Atul Bora, seeking a formal investigation. They have asked the minister to "order a thorough inquiry into the allegations and take appropriate action against those found responsible."
