Report Alleges Financial Irregularities and Overbilling at Meghalaya Cricket Association

Shillong: A report released this May has unveiled serious allegations of financial misconduct within the Meghalaya Cricket Association (MCA). The findings detail a systematic pattern of overbilling, unauthorized payments, and questionable expenditures that have reportedly caused the organization to lose significant sums of money.

The investigation highlights significant price inflation by Lone Tree Consultants Pvt Ltd, the association's long-term travel booking partner. Records indicate that the agency consistently charged more than double the actual cost of airline tickets. In one instance, a team flight costing roughly Rs 3.55 lakh resulted in an invoice for over Rs 7.84 lakh. The report suggests this practice has persisted for three years, with total excess charges across identified invoices exceeding Rs 23.7 lakh.

Further concerns surround spending during the MCA Apex Council elections held in December 2025. The association allegedly paid Rs 16.29 lakh to Aranya: The Merian Resort for events where the reported attendance was far lower than the billed costs. Investigators also questioned why the election was held at a costly resort rather than the MCA headquarters in Shillong, particularly after the event faced a High Court stay.

The report claims that payments to both the travel agency and the resort were processed without mandatory approval from the MCA president or the Apex Council. Auditors noted that unauthorized individuals allegedly cleared these payments while new signatories were still being appointed. The document describes the oversight environment as having "zero due diligence" in processing financial transactions.

Beyond travel and election costs, the report flags suspicious banking activity, including the transfer of over Rs 1.70 crore via multiple RTGS transactions in a single afternoon. These transfers reportedly left identical residual balances, raising red flags regarding transparency and internal controls within the organization.
