Rare Spoon-tailed Duskhawker Dragonfly Photographed in Arunachal Pradesh

Itanagar: A rare Spoon-tailed Duskhawker dragonfly now appears in the official biodiversity records for Arunachal Pradesh. Experts captured the first confirmed photograph of the Gynacantha basiguttata species in October 2024. The sighting occurred near the Miao-Vijaynagar Road inside the Namdapha National Park and Tiger Reserve.

Researchers initially misidentified the insect. Taxonomic experts later confirmed the find as the specific Gynacantha basiguttata variety. This addition expands India's Odonata checklist. The park sits in the Changlang district, a remote area famous for its dense forests and hidden wildlife.

Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein praised the discovery. He noted it proves how much of the region remains scientifically undocumented. Mein said the finding "is another remarkable addition to Arunachal Pradesh's biodiversity story" while pointing to the high species count within local forests. The event highlights the need for ongoing surveys in this corner of India.
