Guwahati: A new species of bent-toed gecko, known as Cyrtodactylus bapme, has been officially recorded in Assam for the first time. The discovery occurred at Urpad Beel in the Goalpara district, an area recognized by environmentalists for its ecological significance and rich wildlife.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared the news on Thursday, noting that the finding reinforces the extraordinary biodiversity supported by the state’s ecosystems. He credited the discovery to ongoing government conservation measures, which aim to protect sensitive habitats and allow rare species to thrive.

The Cyrtodactylus genus represents one of the most diverse groups of geckos globally. Experts explain that these species are often found in very small geographic areas, making them particularly vulnerable to environmental disturbance and habitat loss. The documentation of this gecko at Urpad Beel has highlighted the need for continued scientific exploration and persistent efforts to safeguard wetlands and forests across the region.
