Guwahati: Tensions flared in the Tinsukia district of Assam on Tuesday as thousands of protesters blocked National Highway 37 at Gangabari. The demonstrations followed the death of 45-year-old Mukut Orang, who succumbed to his injuries at the Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh. Orang had been receiving treatment since he was allegedly assaulted on June 11.

The suspect, Mohammed Imran Siddiqui, reportedly owns the Urban Tasty restaurant in Borhapjan. Following Orang's death, members of the All Tea Tribes Students’ Association and the All Assam Students’ Union gathered to demand compensation for the family and justice for the victim. Some demonstrators demanded the harshest punishment permissible under law.

Makum police arrested Siddiqui and moved to seal his business establishment. Authorities registered a case under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges related to the possession of a firearm. Police allegedly recovered a pistol from the accused during the arrest.

Security forces maintained a heavy presence across the region to prevent further unrest. Despite the public outcry and the ongoing investigation into the assault, local police leadership has yet to provide a formal statement on the incident.
