Imphal: Hundreds of demonstrators marched through Imphal on Monday to demand the safe return of six Naga men who remain missing after being allegedly abducted by Kuki militants. Organised by the Naga People's Union, the rally saw participation from both Naga and Meitei community members. Protesters began their march at the Tribal Market in Imphal East and attempted to reach the chief minister's residence before being intercepted by security forces near the Palace Gate.
A delegation was eventually permitted to meet Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh to submit a formal memorandum. The document calls for the immediate rescue of the six captives and demands that authorities hold the responsible parties accountable. The group also requested the removal of Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen from the cabinet, alleging her husband has links to the Kuki National Front.
The current unrest follows a series of abductions that began on May 13 after a deadly ambush claimed the lives of three church leaders in Kangpokpi district. While 32 people were later released, six Naga men remain missing. In response to the crisis, protesters are urging the government to revoke the Suspension of Operations agreement with militant groups and to deport Kuki refugees. Meanwhile, Kuki Inpi Manipur claims that 14 Kuki community members are still being held by Naga groups.
