Shillong: President Droupadi Murmu appointed Professor Saroj Kanta Barik to oversee North-Eastern Hill University. He steps into the role on July 27. This follows the exit of Vice-Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla when his term ends July 26. The Ministry of Education finalized the order on July 22.
Rajesh Kumar, an under secretary for the government, sent the official notice to the university registrar. Barik represents the second senior-most faculty member at the school. He keeps this post until officials name a permanent replacement. The Botany professor previously stabilized the Shillong headquarters on December 19 last year after the Pro Vice-Chancellor quit.
The search for a permanent leader remains stalled. The Ministry of Education has not yet named a chairman for the search-cum-selection committee. Although the NEHU Executive Council submitted two nominees, the process waits on the ministry. Officials originally advertised the opening on May 20. The job requires at least 10 years of professor-level experience and an age under 65. The posting demands a leader of the "highest competence, integrity and institutional commitment" to manage the campus.
