Guwahati: Priyada Gogoi, the mother of Raijor Dal chief and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi, died in Guwahati on Wednesday morning. She was 96 years old and had been battling age-related health issues for an extended period. Family members confirmed she passed away at 6:20 am with her son by her side.

Known for her influence on her son's career, Priyada Gogoi became a prominent figure during the 2021 Assam Assembly elections. While her son was imprisoned for his role in anti-CAA protests, she campaigned tirelessly on his behalf. Despite her age, she went door to door in Sivasagar to secure votes and publicly advocated for his release, a contribution widely recognized as vital to his eventual electoral victory.

Her remains are currently being transported to Selenghat near Mariani in the Jorhat district. Funeral rites are scheduled to take place there with family, relatives, and supporters in attendance. Following the announcement of her death, political figures from across the state offered condolences to the family.
