Guwahati: The prime suspect in a deadly attack in Assam's Nalbari district, Roz Ali, was killed during a police encounter in Mukalmua on Saturday night. The incident follows an assault that claimed the life of 19-year-old Madhurjya Barman and left 18-year-old Mridumudra Deka in critical condition.

Barman, who served as the Assistant General Secretary of the West Nalbari Regional Students Union, died at the scene while travelling on a scooter near Gangapur. Deka was rushed to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, where she remains in the intensive care unit. Police identified Roz Ali and Ashik Ali as the primary suspects behind the violent assault.

The case has triggered significant public outcry, with various groups characterizing the attack as a form of love jihad. These allegations stem from reports that the violence was motivated by a rejected romantic proposal. While police have not officially confirmed this motive, the investigation is ongoing to clarify the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Nalbari MLA Jayanta Malla Baruah addressed the incident, describing the trend of love jihad as a growing threat to society in Assam. He offered his condolences to the family of the deceased and stated that the administration is working to ensure appropriate legal action is taken against those involved.
