Gangtok: President Droupadi Murmu awarded the prestigious President's Colour to the Sikkim Police on Thursday during a ceremony at Palzor Stadium in Gangtok. The honour recognises the force's commitment and service since its establishment in 1897, originally tasked with securing the India-Tibet trade route.

Addressing the event, President Murmu praised the force for maintaining peace and supporting the public during natural disasters. She also noted the global recognition earned by its officers, many of whom have received United Nations Peacekeeping Medals.

The President highlighted a need to move away from colonial-era policing styles that prioritised control over public service. She urged officers to embrace a modern approach focused on transparency and accountability, ensuring that citizens can easily report grievances. She emphasised that police should act as friends and guides, particularly when dealing with women, children, and vulnerable community members.

Given Sikkim's strategic position as a border state and a major tourist destination, President Murmu stressed the importance of national security coordination. She called on the force to modernize its capabilities to effectively combat emerging threats, including cybercrime, online fraud, and deepfake-related offences.
