Shillong: A post-mortem examination of the exhumed body of 27-year-old Trophimos Khongmawloh indicates that his existing injuries were likely not the cause of his death. East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Vivek Syiem, confirmed that investigators are waiting for additional scientific data before reaching a final conclusion.
"The injuries sustained are not sufficient to cause death. The conclusion on the cause can be made only after we receive the histopathological and toxicological reports," Syiem stated. The examination occurred on Monday evening after authorities exhumed the body from Pynter village, nearly 40 days after the initial burial.
The exhumation is part of a broader probe into allegations that Khongmawloh was assaulted inside the Pynter Community Hall on April 7. His father, Netnobiweit Khongsdoh, filed a formal complaint alleging that his son was beaten under the watch of local village officials and members of the Village Defence Party. The complainant also asserted that villagers attempted to blame the death on the consumption of poisonous insects despite observing head trauma on the victim.
Authorities conducted the autopsy with a forensic team from Shillong under heavy security. While the process faced initial delays due to severe weather, officials confirmed the operation proceeded without incident. Police are now waiting for lab results to clarify the circumstances surrounding the death.
