Guwahati: A mother ditched her 11-month-old baby at Silchar Civil Hospital on Sunday. The woman handed the infant to a stranger in the hospital and claimed she needed to use the washroom. The visitor agreed to watch the child out of kindness. She waited for hours but the mother never came back.

Staff alerted the police after the woman failed to return. Officers arrived on the scene and took the child into custody. Authorities are now hunting for the mother to find out why the baby was left behind. Investigators are currently reviewing the incident and searching for leads. No family members have stepped forward yet.

The hospital reached out to the Child Helpline, but no one had arrived by the time reports were filed. Local police said: "Police are examining the circumstances surrounding the incident to ascertain the identity of the child's mother and determine whether the infant was deliberately abandoned or if any other factors led to the child being left behind." The probe remains active as officials try to track down the family.
