Itanagar: Police arrested 41-year-old Rishiraj Borkotoky of Guwahati for a 34.33 crore investment fraud. The arrest happened on June 20. It followed a formal complaint from businessman Rajesh Agarwal.

Borkotoky convinced Agarwal to back an alcohol manufacturing project in Assam. He claimed to have tight links with top political leaders and government officials. To sell the lie, he showed off forged papers from the Union Finance Ministry and the Cabinet Secretary. Naharlagun Superintendent of Police Dr. Nyelam Nega said, "To gain the complainant's confidence, the accused allegedly produced forged documents purportedly issued by the Revenue Department under the Union Finance Ministry and the Office of the Cabinet Secretary."

The con went deeper. Borkotoky used a fake WhatsApp account featuring the Assam Chief Minister's photo. He shared doctored images to boost his image as a connected insider. Between 2022 and now, the victim sent over 34.33 crore to the accused. Police tracked the suspect to Guwahati using intelligence and surveillance.

Officers seized five phones and a luxury vehicle worth 1.5 crore. The suspect is now in police custody for 10 days. Investigators are checking if he used artificial intelligence to fake the Chief Minister's voice. They are also chasing the money trail through various bank accounts held by the suspect's family and associates. Authorities warn the public to verify all investment claims independently.
