Police Investigate Death of Newborn Found in Assam Well

Guwahati: Police pulled the body of a 12-day-old girl from a well in North Gopalpur village on Saturday, August 1. The village sits under the Radhapyari Gaon Panchayat in the Patharkandi constituency of Assam's Sribhumi district. A grim discovery. Investigators moved in fast.

Arun Das, the infant's father, told reporters his wife woke at 3 a.m. crying. She claimed an unidentified woman snatched their daughter. Khinindra Nath Biswas, the Bazaricherra Police Station Officer-in-Charge, led a team to the scene to launch a search. They found the baby in the well shortly after.

Senior officials, including the Patharkandi Circle Officer and the Sub-Divisional Police Officer, visited the site. The administration sent the remains to the district civil hospital for a post-mortem exam. Police have registered a case and are now digging into the facts. They admit the mother's story remains unverified. "Officials are examining all aspects of the case as part of the ongoing investigation."
