Police Investigate Assault on Construction Workers at Sohra Resort Site

Shillong: Police in East Khasi Hills have opened an investigation into a violent confrontation at the Centrepoint Group construction site in Laitkynsew village, Sohra. Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem confirmed that officers are looking into reports that approximately 15 individuals trespassed onto the project grounds last Thursday afternoon and assaulted the staff.

The company management reported that the intruders claimed to represent the Khasi Students Union during the attack. Five workers, including Manish Sharma, Papu Sharma, Raj Kumar Sharma, Mitlis Kumar, and Sorjo Bhumij, were injured. Raj Kumar Sharma suffered serious head injuries and required hospital treatment.

Larsing Sawyan, managing director of the Centrepoint Group, condemned the incident as an unlawful act of violence. He argued that the assault threatens the fundamental rights of employees and warns that such intimidation creates a hostile environment for business. With a local workforce of over 680 people, the company maintains that violence against private projects risks damaging the future of tourism and development in Meghalaya.

The Meghalaya Rural Tourism Forum also denounced the incident, stating that intimidation has no place in society. President Alan West Kharkongor urged the state government to ensure the safety of project sites and investors while emphasizing that any grievances should be resolved through legal channels rather than violence.
