Guwahati: Arunachal Pradesh Police arrested 41-year-old businessman Rishiraj Borkotoky on June 20. He faces charges for a massive 34.33 crore investment scam. Officers seized five mobile phones and a 1.5 crore luxury car during the bust. The trouble started at Banderdewa Police Station after businessman Rajesh Agarwal filed a formal complaint.

Borkotoky allegedly conned Agarwal into funding a fake Extra Neutral Alcohol manufacturing project. He lied about having deep ties to government power brokers to lock in the deal. He even faked a WhatsApp account using the Assam Chief Minister's profile picture to look legit. Investigators are now checking if a suspicious voice call was made by an AI tool or just clever impersonation.

Naharlagun SP Nyelam Nega detailed the elaborate ruse used to trap the investor. "To gain the complainant's trust, he allegedly produced forged documents purportedly issued by the Revenue Department under the Union Finance Ministry and the Office of the Cabinet Secretary," Nega said.

The victim wired over 34.33 crore starting in 2022. The money moved through various accounts linked to the suspect's family and business cronies. Borkotoky owns a Guwahati restaurant and previously ran a short-lived newspaper. He also holds ties to festival organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta. A court in Yupia handed him 10 days of police custody. Detectives are now hunting for the remaining cash.
