Guwahati: Police in Assam's Dhubri district arrested four individuals following the discovery of over 33 kilograms of suspected beef transported by boat. The seizures occurred during two separate river patrol operations aimed at dismantling illegal transport networks in the region.
The first operation targeted a vessel named SB Dosti, which authorities intercepted near the Dhubri District Commissioner's office. Officers discovered roughly 30 kilograms of boiled meat concealed in bags after receiving a tip that the consignment was being smuggled from Jaleswar. Police took two boat staff members, Abdul Majid Sarkar and Abul Hussain, into custody at the scene.
Shortly after, police intercepted a second group at Jogmaya Ghat. Officers recovered 3.5 kilograms of meat from a boatman named Hanif Ali and a passenger identified as Ahinur Haque. Authorities believe this smaller shipment originated from the areas of Fakirganj and Phulbari in neighboring Meghalaya.
All four suspects are currently held at the Dhubri Police Station for questioning. Officials have registered separate cases for each incident and launched a broader investigation into the riverine smuggling routes. These operations took place while the local Muslim community in Dhubri voluntarily abstained from cow sacrifice during Eid-ul-Azha to preserve communal harmony.
