Guwahati: Lakhimpur police busted a counterfeit currency ring on Monday. Officers arrested 10 suspects and seized fake notes worth Rs 15 lakh. Raids hit several villages across the Bongalmora area, including No. 2 Islampur, Yuba Nagar, and Balijan.
The operation involved teams from the Laluk and Bihpuria police stations. Arrested suspects include Md. Abdul Rajak, Md. Rajibul Haque, Md. Muksidul Alam, Md. Riaj Uddin, Md. Imran Hussain, Motiur Rahman, Sahabul Islam, Ikramul Islam, Hebjur Rahman, and Mizanur Rahman. Authorities identified Mizanur Rahman as a repeat offender, noting he was previously caught in 2018 with a printing machine.
Police registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Laluk Police Station. Officials confirmed that an investigation is ongoing to trace the source of the cash. Police described Monday's crackdown as "another significant step towards dismantling organised counterfeit currency syndicates operating in Lakhimpur district."
This seizure follows a June 29 operation where officers recovered Rs 33.59 lakh in counterfeit notes. That stop led to two arrests and the seizure of a hatchback. Criminals have used these villages for years to push fake cash and fake gold. Law enforcement has targeted this specific network since 2015.
