Kohima: The Tana-Bana District Handloom Expo kicked off July 13 at the Baptist Theological College ground in Pfutsero. Rev Dr Chekrovei Cho-O, Executive Secretary of the Chakhesang Baptist Church Council, officially opened the event. The exhibition runs through July 18.
The Nagaland Handloom & Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd organizes the event. The Office of the Development Commissioner for Handlooms, based in New Delhi, provides the sponsorship. Forty master artisans and weavers from across Nagaland currently display their work at the site. They showcase traditional fabrics and various craft items representing diverse tribal identities.
Organizers want to build better markets. They aim to bridge the gap between rural craftsmen and modern buyers. The expo creates direct links to both domestic and international export channels. It helps local talent reach wider audiences.
Deputy General Manager Project for NHHDC Ltd noted the goal is to "enhance the economic empowerment of grassroots weavers and artisans, ensuring long-term growth and resilience for Nagaland's traditional handloom and handicraft sectors." Stalls came free of charge. Participants also received travel, freight, and daily allowances to support their attendance.
