Itanagar: Widespread outrage is building across Arunachal Pradesh following reports that prominent anti-drug activist Gumin Mize suffered physical abuse while in police custody in Assam. Mize, who leads the Arunachal Anti Drugs Warrior organisation, was detained by Assam Police near the state border, leading to allegations that officers treated him with excessive force.

Supporters of the activist point to circulating photographs that show visible injuries and bruises on Mize. Members of his organization claim he was mistreated despite his extensive track record of fighting narcotics trafficking and assisting with rehabilitation efforts in the region. The detention reportedly stems from a complaint filed by Popi Kakoti, the wife of a man previously arrested by Arunachal authorities for alleged drug peddling.

Civil society groups, youth organizations, and human rights activists are now calling for a transparent and impartial investigation into the conduct of the police. Many have demanded judicial intervention, urging state and national human rights bodies to hold the involved officers accountable. Some supporters have also called on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to personally oversee the inquiry to ensure fair treatment.

While public pressure intensifies, the Assam Police have yet to issue an official statement regarding the allegations of torture. Meanwhile, critics are pushing for the Arunachal Pradesh government to take a more active role in advocating for the activist, emphasizing the importance of his work in curbing substance abuse near the border.
