Guwahati: Opposition legislators staged a walkout during the Assam Legislative Assembly session on May 22. Members of the Indian National Congress and other opposition parties boycotted the Governor's address to protest the government's response to the rising cost of living.

Congress MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed told reporters that the decision to skip the speech served as a formal protest. He argued that the address failed to acknowledge the severe financial strain facing the public. Ahmed stated that while the opposition remains committed to supporting state development, they felt compelled to highlight the plight of families struggling with the surging prices of essential goods.

The protesting lawmakers emphasized that inflation has hit poor and middle-class households particularly hard. According to Ahmed, the government's silence on these economic challenges ignored the daily reality for citizens across the state.
