Guwahati: The old Saraighat Bridge across the Brahmaputra shuts down on July 13. Kamrup (Metro) District Commissioner Swapneel Paul confirmed the bridge will stay closed through September 15 for major maintenance. Repairs are mandatory.

Rail authorities notified the district administration that the structure needs immediate work. Officials from Kamrup and Kamrup (Metro) districts met to hash out a plan for the closure.

"After extensive deliberations and requests from the concerned agencies, it has been decided that the old Saraighat Bridge will remain closed to traffic for a period of two months, from July 13 to September 15," Paul said.

Traffic will move to the new Saraighat Bridge. All vehicles heading between Kamrup Rural and Kamrup (Metro) must use the new span. Officials are coordinating now to keep traffic flowing and keep commuters safe while the old bridge gets fixed.
