Imphal: The National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN-IM) laid out its version of the June 26 firing at Kaiphundai. They allege Indian security forces hauled ZUF-J cadres from Khoupum to Old Agro Mile in Kaiphundai Kuki Village. The situation turned sour quickly. Cadres allegedly hit the Kaiphundai outpost before moving to NH-37 to collect illegal taxes and shake down passing travelers.
NSCN-IM officials argue the ZUF-J broke the terms of the Cessation of Operation agreement with the Indian government. That deal mandates ZUF-J cadres stay at their Mount Ararat camp. Taxes are off-limits. The NSCN-IM claims they repeatedly asked the group to stop, but the ZUF-J ignored the warnings. They claim they fired warning shots to avoid a larger fight after a long period of holding back.
Tensions remain high in the region. The NSCN-IM labels the ZUF-J a proxy group working for the government to damage the Naga movement. They pointed to claims from former members on social media to back these accusations. The group also warned that ZUF-J uses the promise of a Zeliangrong Homeland to trick local people for political gain.
Looking ahead, the NSCN-IM wants other factions to back the 2015 Framework Agreement. They claim to remain open to talking with rival groups to find a path forward. The statement ended with a clear demand. "The Naga solution is One Talk, One Agreement," the group said.
