NPP Leader James P K Sangma Files Nomination for Rajya Sabha Seat

Shillong: Former Meghalaya legislator and National People’s Party leader James P K Sangma officially entered the race for the upcoming Rajya Sabha election on June 8. He submitted his nomination papers to Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Secretary Malthus S Sangma.

The ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance has put Sangma forward as its consensus candidate. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, who serves as the national president of the NPP, attended the filing process alongside cabinet ministers and representatives from coalition partners. The candidacy has received backing from major allies including the United Democratic Party, the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Hill State People’s Democratic Party, and several independent legislators.

Following the submission, Sangma thanked the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Ministers Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar, and the supporting lawmakers for their confidence in him. Regarding his future role in the Upper House, he stated, "If elected to the Upper House of Parliament, he would focus on raising unresolved issues concerning Meghalaya and ensuring stronger representation of the state at the national level."

Sangma noted that his selection followed extensive discussions among alliance partners. He expressed his readiness to take on the new responsibility and advocate for the state's interests at the national level.
