Shillong: Dr. WR Kharlukhi is keeping his options open. The founding architect of the National People's Party resigned on August 24 after filing his paperwork with state president and Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong. He spent four decades in the field.
Kharlukhi dismissed talk of fatigue or internal fights. He compared this exit to his past departure from the UDP. The veteran strategist holds no personal grudges against current NPP leadership. "Leaving a party simply because of personal feelings would reflect a lack of political understanding," he said.
He framed the resignation as professional judgment. There is no blame game here. From 2012 to 2023, he served as state president and turned the NPP from a small outfit into the dominant force in Meghalaya. His exit marks the end of a foundational chapter.
The move stirs rumors about the 2028 Assembly polls and upcoming MDC elections. Kharlukhi is currently stepping back, but he refuses to call it a permanent departure. He claims future conditions will dictate his next move. He might return, join a new group, or walk away for good.
