Shillong: Policymakers, industry leaders, and government officials gathered at the Lariti Performing Centre in New Shillong on Monday for the North East India Infrastructure Summit and Exhibition 2026. The two-day event focuses on the region's evolving role in India's national development landscape.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari opened the summit alongside Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio. Before the formal ceremony, Gadkari met with industry executives and inaugurated an exhibition showcasing regional development initiatives.

Meghalaya Chief Secretary Shakil P. Ahammed labeled the summit a milestone for the region, marking the first event dedicated specifically to its infrastructure expansion. He noted that the Northeast has moved past its historical challenges to become a central hub for economic opportunity. Reflecting on this shift, Ahammed stated, "The northeast is no more the periphery, but the pole of India's future and growth."

The summit aims to facilitate discussions on investment strategies and infrastructure improvements across all eight northeastern states. Officials noted that sustained policy attention from the central government has already driven visible progress in road and development sectors throughout the area.
