Guwahati: Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari held a high-level meeting on May 20 to evaluate the status of 4,178 kilometres of National Highway projects in Assam. The government initiated this review after receiving feedback from media reports and social media concerning the state of highway maintenance and project progress.
During the session, Gadkari urged officials to speed up construction work on the ground. He emphasized the importance of improving monitoring systems to ensure that roads are durable and provide a smoother experience for travelers. He also directed the use of modern construction techniques designed to boost long-term infrastructure performance and cut down on future maintenance needs.
With the monsoon season fast approaching, the minister highlighted the need for immediate action to protect critical highway corridors. He called for improved drainage systems and robust slope protection measures. Officials must also establish rapid response teams to address potential damage and maintain safety for commuters during heavy rains.
