NITI Aayog Names Meghalaya a Top Year-Round Tourism Destination

Shillong: NITI Aayog has recognized Meghalaya as a premier all-season tourism destination in India, citing the state's natural attractions and distinct indigenous culture as key drivers for its growing economy. According to the 2026 report titled Divya Bharat: A Window to the Soul of India, the state saw tourist arrivals rise from 1.2 million in 2018 to over 1.6 million in 2025, with a target of 2.1 million visitors by 2028.

The state has successfully leveraged its living root bridges and extensive cave networks to attract travelers. To accommodate this influx, the government bypassed traditional hotel construction in favor of a decentralized homestay model. The Meghalaya Tourism Homestay Scheme, launched in 2023, provides financial support covering up to 70 percent of project costs. This initiative has already led to the creation of nearly 1,500 jobs and 1,000 new rooms across 490 operational properties.

Building on this momentum, the Chief Minister’s Meghalaya Homestay Mission aims to add 3,000 more units and create 15,000 jobs by 2028. These facilities are expected to provide the primary lodging for visitors attending the 39th National Games in 2027, ensuring tourism revenue remains within local communities. Authorities are also enhancing state infrastructure through projects like the Shillong Ropeway, the Mawkdok Skywalk, and planned runway expansions at Shillong Airport.

NITI Aayog developed the report in coordination with the Ministry of Tourism to encourage immersive travel and spread footfall throughout the year. By promoting lesser-known cultural and natural sites, the initiative seeks to foster authentic connections between visitors and local communities while strengthening rural economies across the country.
