Aizawl: Nirupam Chakma took the oath as Chief Executive Member of the Chakma Autonomous District Council on Wednesday. The move ends a year of Governor's rule in the region. Governor Vijay Kumar Singh appointed Chakma to the post on July 3. He now leads a coalition government backed by the Zoram People's Movement.
Chakma faces a floor test on July 9. He must prove his majority within the 20-member council. The BJP and ZPM formed the Chakma Democratic Alliance Legislature Party in late June to take control. The BJP holds 10 seats to the ZPM's nine.
The ceremony took place in Kamalanagar. Local politicians and officials watched the event. Chakma is a veteran politician who previously served as a state minister and a member of the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes. He promised to focus on transparency and public service.
"My government would focus on transparent and accountable governance while prioritising infrastructure development, education, healthcare, agriculture, employment generation and efficient public service delivery," Chakma said. Mizoram Minister C. Lalsawivunga attended the ceremony and praised the move toward stable leadership.
The state government recently hiked the council budget to over Rs 169 crore for the 2026-27 period. They are pushing for direct funding from the Centre. Officials also want the anti-defection law to cover the district councils. Stability returns to the region after a year of political chaos.
