Guwahati: Noonmati Police have rescued a five-day-old newborn from Nalbari after the infant was allegedly sold by its biological parents. The parents, who reside in Patharquarry, admitted to selling the child because of extreme financial distress.

Authorities have detained the couple suspected of purchasing the baby. Following the rescue, the infant was taken to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital to receive medical care and observation.

The newborn is scheduled to appear before the Child Welfare Committee on May 21. Officials noted that the Nalbari-based couple involved in the purchase might eventually be allowed to adopt the child if they follow the legal procedures mandated by the committee. Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances of the sale.
