Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma opened the 750-bed Baba Baidyanath Medical Trust Hospital in Deoghar, Jharkhand, on September 23. This facility aims to turn the city into a medical tourism hub. The hospital represents a collaboration between the Baba Baidyanath Medical Trust and the P.D. Hinduja Hospital and Medical Research Centre. Future plans include adding a medical college on the site.
Sarma said the hospital prioritizes affordable care for low and middle-income patients. He noted the facility improves local access, reducing the need for travel. "People from Deoghar, Godda and other parts of Jharkhand earlier had to travel to Kolkata for quality medical treatment. However, a strong healthcare ecosystem is gradually being established in the state," Sarma said.
Officials believe this hospital and the existing AIIMS Deoghar will serve both Jharkhand and Bihar. Sarma credited MP Nishikant Dubey for regional growth, citing local infrastructure like the airport, ring road, and rail links. The hospital design features ICU and emergency departments built for ordinary patients. It intends to operate for public welfare rather than purely for profit.
Sarma used the event to highlight national medical growth under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He noted that medical colleges rose from 387 in 2014 to 846 today. Annual MBBS production climbed from 51,384 to 1,39,864. Assam specifically now boasts 16 medical colleges and produces 2,200 doctors yearly. The state plans to reach 4,000 MBBS seats through 32 additional colleges. Godda MP Nishikant Dubey and Trust chairperson Dr. Anamika Gautam joined the ceremony.
