Shillong: Employees at the North-Eastern Hill University Tura campus initiated an indefinite pen-down strike on Tuesday to protest the university's failure to address their long-standing professional grievances. Members of the Tura Campus Staff Welfare Association gathered at the campus to signal their frustration with authorities, marking the start of a sustained protest.
The staff are demanding pay parity, a review of recent arbitrary promotions, and the immediate release of gratuity payments. Additionally, the association is calling for the formal registration of the Employees' Provident Fund and the consistent, timely payment of salaries for casual workers. The group also requested a formal review of the Department of Personnel and Training order regarding their compensation structure.
TCSWA president Tangseng G. Momin stated that the strike follows years of inaction from both local and high-level university officials. He remarked, “The agitation is due to the complete failure of NEHU authorities, both at the highest and the local level, to resolve the matter pending for decades.” The union maintains that their requests align with central government recommendations and that they intend to continue the agitation until these discrepancies are resolved.
