Kohima: In observance of World Hypertension Day, the Nature SBI Foundation Kiphire hosted an informative health programme at Modern Cambridge School in Amahator Town on May 16. Although the global observance of the day falls on May 17, organizers held the event one day early to accommodate the Sunday schedule, ensuring maximum participation from the local community.
During the session, staff nurse Pikhumla addressed the attendees, characterizing hypertension as a silent killer that can result in severe health issues like kidney complications, strokes, and heart disease if left untreated. She emphasized the critical need for consistent blood pressure monitoring and the adoption of proactive lifestyle changes, including regular exercise, smoking cessation, alcohol avoidance, and maintaining a healthy body weight.
A significant portion of the presentation focused on nutrition, with Pikhumla detailing the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet. This approach advocates for a balanced intake of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and low-fat dairy, while strictly limiting the consumption of sugar, salt, and saturated fats.
T. Kirithong Sangtam, Chairman of the school management committee, praised the initiative and noted that prioritizing health awareness is vital for the overall well-being of the community. Longtili C. Sangtam, the project lead for Nature SBI Foundation Nagaland, thanked the school for hosting the event. He reaffirmed the foundation's unwavering dedication to public welfare, noting that their outreach efforts remain transparent, community-focused, and committed to high standards of service, refuting any baseless claims suggesting otherwise regarding the organization's integrity or operations.
