Guwahati: Nalbari Deputy Superintendent of Police Kusum Kumar Basumatary was transferred to the 21st Assam Police Battalion in Hailakandi. This move follows a heated investigation into claims that a NEET aspirant had to strip his sacred thread before entering a test center. The incident happened on June 21 during a re-test.

A Brahmin student reported he was forced to remove the religious item at the door. He identified specific officers involved in the frisking. Nalbari District Commissioner Nibedan Das Patowary noted that there was no valid justification for asking the candidate to remove his sacred thread during security checks. The student's mother, Runumi Bhagawati, stated that the family had already removed a metallic ring from the thread to meet testing rules.

Havildar Paban Kalita of Belsor Police Station is currently under reserve close due to the probe. Superintendent of Police Bibekananda Das confirmed an IPS officer is now running a departmental inquiry. Officials confirmed that no agency, including the NTA, requested the removal of such items. The department will decide on further disciplinary steps once the investigation concludes.
