Kohima: Nagaland marked World Population Day and the start of Population Week on July 11. Districts across the state held events to push the theme of healthy timing and spacing between pregnancies. Officials want to improve the well-being of mothers and children while cutting down on unintended pregnancies.
Events took place in Dimapur, Phek, Mokokchung, and Peren. Health workers led focus group discussions and awareness drives. CMO Dr. T. Yetovi Tuccu told medical staff in Dimapur that every pregnancy should be by choice. He warned against the dangers linked to unplanned pregnancies. Medical teams are now offering free family planning services, including sterilization and counseling, throughout the week.
In Phek, gynecologist Dr. Pangertemsu pushed for early registration for prenatal care. He urged couples to use medical check-ups and choose institutional births to ensure safety. Officials in Mokokchung are also running block-level campaigns to distribute contraceptives and IUCD services.
Dr. Velentina Neikha addressed a crowd in Peren. She noted that "investing in young people through healthy habits, education, access to health services and social security coverage is the best way to secure the future generation." Authorities hope these local efforts lead to better family planning outcomes statewide.
