Kohima: Nagaland observed World Blood Donor Day on June 14 with a series of blood donation camps and awareness programs held across the state. The events aimed to emphasize the critical need for voluntary donations and to strengthen local blood donation networks.
In Zunheboto, the Green Club Zunheboto partnered with the Zunheboto District Legal Services Authority and Hezukhu Memorial District Hospital for an event themed One Drop of Humanity. Give Blood. Save Lives. During the program, club president Tavinto Sumi noted that the district lacks a formal blood bank, making the support of voluntary donors essential. He urged local youth to join the network to help save lives during medical emergencies.
Dr. Akaho Sema, a medical officer at the district hospital, highlighted the rising demand for blood for surgeries, dialysis, and pregnancy-related complications. He noted that healthy people can donate every three months while receiving basic health screenings in the process. Dr. Sema stated, "Blood cannot be manufactured and hospitals depend entirely on voluntary donations."
Officials including L. Holuto Ayemi reiterated the urgent need for a dedicated blood bank in Zunheboto to improve emergency response times. To encourage participation, the hospital issued official Blood Donor Identity Cards to regular contributors. Similar efforts occurred in Dimapur, where the Nagaland Running Club collaborated with the Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research for a donation camp, and the District Hospital hosted representatives from various organizations and the 78th Battalion CRPF.
