Kohima: Nagaland marked International Widows Day on June 23 through a series of events in Shamator, Chumoukedima, and Dimapur. The initiatives focused on the welfare and resilience of widows across the state.

In Shamator, the Department of Social Welfare hosted a program under Mission Shakti. Deputy Commissioner Arikumba addressed the crowd and emphasized the necessity of self-reliance. He said, "The day was not only to share grievances and challenges but also to recognise their strength and positive contributions."

District Programme Officer Renchano Odyuo pledged ongoing departmental support for these families. She pushed the attendees to keep a positive outlook while working toward economic independence.

Healthcare took center stage in Dimapur. Pro Rural and Circle of Hope partnered with the Urban Primary Health Centre in Duncan Bosti to run a free medical camp at Signal Angami Village. Doctors treated 61 patients during the event. Staff performed dental and eye exams, checked blood sugar levels, and handed out free medication to those in need.

Meanwhile, the Aloino Centre held a separate meeting at Chekiye Village in Chumoukedima. Director Dr. Anshely Sumi called for better protection of rights and equal standing for widows in society. The event ended with a prayer for widows throughout the state and the world.
